What is Money & Me?
“Money & Me: Youth Financial Empowerment Programme” is the flagship programme of The Edge Education Foundation. Launched in 2016, this free co-curricular programme equips Form 4 students with financial literacy and basic entrepreneurship skills. The very first lesson in Money & Me encourages participants to think about money, the importance of money to well-being, saving for the future, and the concept of “pay yourself first”. Participants also learn to differentiate between needs and wants, budgeting, compound interest, as well as the need to give back.
Money & Me then uses these as a platform to teach participants basic entrepreneurship skills. The programme culminates in the “Money & Me Young Entrepreneurs Challenge” where teams compete to win prizes for the best business plan and Instagram promotional video.
Money & Me is carried out in schools in collaboration with partners from the corporate sector, academia and Rotary Clubs as well as teachers.

Learning to give back
Before the Covid-19 pandemic struck in 2020, Money & Me participants were required to put their business plans into action on “Sales Day”, a half-day or one-day event at schools where students sold their products or services. Between 2016 when the programme was launched and 2019, Money & Me participants earned RM96,396 from Sales Day and donated almost a quarter of the total to charity. Among the beneficiaries were the PIBG or PTA in participating schools which then channelled the funds to B40 students in the respective schools. Other beneficiaries included orphanages and the homeless.

Money & Me Phase 2 impact assessment results
Phase 2 impact assessment was conducted in 2019, two years after the first cohort of Money & Me participants had completed the programme and had already left school. It was carried out to measure Money & Me alumni's attitudes, practices and behaviour with regards to money and saving and their knowledge of money management and entrepreneurship. The alumni surveyed included those from the 2016 and 2017 cohorts. The survey was administered via phone call and WhatsApp. Out of 129 alumni, 14 from the 2016 cohort and 67 from the 2017 cohort participated. The results were very encouraging and showed that a large majority retained an awareness of the need to manage their money well.
